Nature Afloat: A Shared Vision for Littles Lake

Abstract:

Little’s Lake is a local park and lake located in Menands, whose water quality has declined dramatically over the years due to urbanization. The lake has been affected by large amounts of algae and duckweed, which cover its surface, causing a foul smell. The purpose of this project is to build a floating wetland in order to absorb the excess nutrients that have been causing the excess growth of the algae and duckweed populations. We used specific plants that are adapted to absorb excess nutrients, like phosphorus and nitrogen, from the water. We collected water samples every two weeks and sent them to a special lab being operated by CSLAP. While building the floating wetland, we also created a collaborative relationship between Siena University and the owners of Little’s Lake.
