Communicating to Stakeholders about Albany Flood Risk
Abstract:
This project explores flood risk and resilience strategies for the Albany waterfront, a vulnerable area along the Hudson River in Albany, New York. Through 160 hours of research, I examined how social, environmental, and infrastructural factors contribute to flood vulnerability, particularly for socially disadvantaged communities. Social vulnerability indicators such as income, disability, and housing conditions were analyzed to understand which populations face the greatest risk and are often excluded from traditional emergency responses.I also investigated how access to green space affects both social and environmental resilience, and the difference between green and grey infrastructure in flood management. To support public outreach, I created community briefs to communicate these findings in a clear and accessible way. This research emphasizes the importance of inclusive flood management that prioritizes the needs of at-risk populations and supports long-term community resilience. Future steps include collaboration with local organizations and securing funding to support implementation.Title
